The 2020 Paralympic Games were originally scheduled to take place in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, from August 25 to September 6, and thus also the Olympic Games.

At the Paralymics there are 22 different sports to admire: archery, athletics, boccia, badminton, canoeing, cycling, equestrian, 5-a-side football, goal ball, judo, powerlifting, rowing, shooting, swimming, table tennis, teakwondo, triathlon, sitting volleyball, wheelchair Basketball, wheelchair fencing, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis.

Now we want to give you some information about the most interesting sports and athletes at the Paralympics 2020:

Goalball

Goalball became a Paralympic sport in 1976. There are two teams with three players each. The players try to throw the ball into the opposing goal. They use a ball that makes a noise when it touches the ground. Two men, a German and an Austrian, invented the game in 1946 for soldiers who were disabled after the war.

Wheelchair rugby

Wheelchair rugby is a new sport. It is about 50 years old. It became a part of the Paralympics in 2000. Wheelchair rugby began in Canada and then came to America, England and Germany. Today, wheelchair rugby is popular in more than 20 countries. It is a bit different to rugby because you need a special ball. The ball looks a bit like a volleyball. It is not okay to touch the body of another player, but you can tackle the other players’ wheelchairs with your own wheelchair. That is why they use special wheelchairs.

Wheelchair tennis

Wheelchair tennis became a part of the Paralympics in the year 1992. It is like normal tennis but the players are in wheelchairs. Moreover, the ball can bounce two times on the court. The wheelchair is like a part of the body, so the ball should not touch the wheelchair. Brad Parks from America developed the sport in 1976. Today there is wheelchair tennis at important tennis competitions, too, for example Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open and French Open.

Felix Streng – Athletics

Felix Streng is twenty-five years old and a German athlete. When he was a child, he lived close to Coburg. He is successful in athletics and he is especially good at the 100- and 200-metres race. He was very good at the Paralympics in 2016. He won the gold medal in the relay race and the bronce medal in the 100-metres race and in long-jump.

Jessica Long – Swimming

Jessica Long is a swimmer from the US. She is 28 years old and she is the best disabled swimmer in the world. She took part in four Paralympics and won 23 medals. She hasn’t got lower legs, but she can do a lot of great activities. When she was a child, she was doing a lot of sports, but swimming is the sport she likes the most. When she was 12 years old, she took part in the Paralympics in Athens and she was the youngest athlete there. Moreover she also broke many world records.
